Pets

* If you have lost a pet and would like us to post it on our lost and found page OR you have found a pet and would like us to post it send the info w/picture to: lostandfound@purrproject.org.

The Best strategy is to keep your loved ones from getting lost.
  • A collar with an up-to-date phone number and current rabies tags are a must even for indoor only cats.

  • Do a pet head count before you go to bed each night.

  • Inspect all screens for damaged areas where your pet could squeeze out.

  • Make sure all outdoor access doors will self-fasten when left open.

  • Always have up-to-date photos of your pets and store copies outside of your home incase of fire.

  • Keep your pets inside the house when you are not home.

  • Make sure your pet is inside during thunderstorms or fireworks.

  • Do a pet head count before you go to bed each night.

  • Spay or neuter your pets to avoid roaming and aggression.

  • Don’t discuss the value, pedigree lines, awards or any special training your dog has with strangers.

If your pet does get lost

  • Take action immediately. The sooner you start your search, the better your chances of finding the animal.

  • First, search your property thoroughly.

  • Call every animal shelter, animal control department, humane society and veterinarian in your area.

  • Make a flyer. Design a simple format with easy-to-read type and a photo (color, if possible) of the pet. Do not include too much detail.

  • Place lost pet ads in your local and daily newspapers.

  • Check your local shelters and animal control departments at least every other day after you initially alert them.

  • Check the newspaper “found” ads every day.

  • Take advantage of lost pet posting sites on the Internet, including.

  • Call local veterinarian offices during the day.

  • Place strong-scented articles outside your home to attract your pet.
